Love It or Leave It: Your Balenciaga City Bag Can Now Come Pre-Graffiti’d

A BAG FOR THOSE WHO DON’T HAVE THE WILL TO ACQUIRE PAINT PENS OF THEIR OWN

Over the past several years, we’ve noticed a lot of notable people doing something a bit controversial: embellishing designer bags with drawings, paint splatters, graffiti—you name it. Some people (including some of you guys) take exception to what they see as being careless with a very expensive piece of fashion, but others (including me, usually) are pretty into it. After all, at a point in the industry where pretty much everything is mass-produced, personalizing a bag yourself seems to me like a totally reasonable way to make a piece seem less generic, especially if you’re artistic and it’s a bag you’ve had for a while that could use a second wind.

Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia also took notice of this trend, apparently, and he’s decided to skewer it (as he so often does with trends that spring up from consumers organically and without marketing from brands) by releasing the Balenciaga’s own graffiti-covered version of the iconic Balenciaga City Bag.

This bag is the small size of the design, and it includes plenty of multicolored “customizations” that look as though you might have taken a set of paint pens to the thing yourself while emboldened by the consumption of a medium amount of wine. The bag loses its appeal for me because the thing I like about graffiti-covered bags is that no two are alike, but standardizing a design to look like those bags means that the trend has simply been commodified. And that seems to be the point Gvasalia is makes: there’s nothing fashion can’t metabolize, nothing it can’t pluck from the individual and produce at scale. It’s a smart commentary, but not necessarily one I’d want to carry on my arm.

Chanel Classic Flap Folding Bags

Other Brands

IMAGE: CHANEL

Because good things must share (which incidentally also applies to cute things), here are two of the most adorable bags from S/S17 that are definitely worth a closer look. Known loosely as Classic Flap Folding Bags, they sport the same shape, have the same size (17 cm by 13.5 cm by 8 cm) and come finished with gold-tone hardware, though you could say one’s finished with a shinier brassy gold (top) while the other has hardware that’s aged slightly (bottom).

Another difference, the one in Fuchsia comes in chevron-quilted lambskin leather, while the one in Blue comes in grained calfskin leather. Priced at SGD3590 and SGD4660 respectively, it just boils down to which of the two little darlings you love more, so what say you?

In her interview, Chrissy talks about how she is not a fan of working out. “I know I should exercise for mental reasons…I need to see Simone De La Rue; I always feel great after I see her. In L.A., there’s never any f***ing parking. So for someone who doesn’t already love working out, nothing’s selling you on it.”

ZENDAYA ON HER ROLE FOR K.C. UNDERCOVER

In her interview, Zendaya talks about how she negotiated her contract for the Disney show ‘K.C. Undercover’. “I wanted to make sure that she wasn’t good at singing or acting or dancing. That she wasn’t artistically inclined. I didn’t want them to all of a sudden be like, ‘Oh, yeah, and then she sings this episode!’ No. She can’t dance; she can’t sing.”

Zendaya continues, “She can’t do that stuff. There are other things that a girl can be….I want her to be martial arts–trained. I want her to be able to do everything that a guy can do. I want her to be just as smart as everybody else. I want her to be a brainiac.”
